WHY cryopreserve mouse colonies?

The advantages of maintaining potentially valuable animal colonies in frozen storage are apparent: 

  • Reduces animal housing space and cost; 
  • Safeguards strains of mice from genetic drift;
  • Prevents loss due to disease or catastrophe, etc. 

                                  

Cryopreserving embryos or sperm?

While mouse sperm can be cryopreserved successfully, the later use, however, in producing a viable embryo following in vitro fertilization has proven to be difficult. This adds to the significance of freezing mouse embryos as an alternative. Embryos are frozen either by rate controlled or non-rate controlled methods, and are then transferred to liquid nitrogen tanks for long-term storage. Cryopreserved embryos can then be recovered to regenerate a colony of live animals, at any time the investigator desires.
